Packard Pupi Alisa Toelupe Sr (Pupi T. Alisa), age 89, was born in Mapusaga, American Samoa on November 29, 1927, although due to clerical error, his records were recorded as being born in 1928. He is number five of fifteen children of Alisa Fanene Toelupe and Tuta’itaualeto’asavili “Kuka” Tuatagaloa.
Pupi was married and sealed to Peka Bertha Hannemann Samoa for time and all eternity on April 18, 1970 in the Los Angeles Temple. Together they were blessed with seven children. From oldest to youngest: Packard Pupi Toelupe Jr, married to Chrisann Richins. They have four children, Christian, Micah, Gabriel, and Kainoa. Ni’i Bertha Toelupe, married to David “Ti” Kinikini. They have one child, Liutai Hinckley. Harold Elisala Toelupe, married to Dionne Kehau Wills. They have five children, Brianna, Alicia, Kekaimalino, Jaddy, and Sekoa. Jaddy Liutai Toelupe, married to Tiffany “Tia” Leapai. They have two children, Jonah and Joyleia. Next is their daughter, Tuta’itaualeto’asavili Margaret Toelupe. Their youngest daughter is Ireen Ituau Toelupe, married to Kimo Ka’anapu. Thru her marriage to Kimo, she and the rest of the family were blessed with four children, Ki’ani, Kaline, Kimo boy, and Kaheina. The baby of the family is Pupi Lama Toelupe, married to Marina “Liga” Adelaide-Keamalu Fono’imoana. They have five children, Siliva, Marina, Ferrin, LaVern, and Sterling.
Pupi was a strong faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and until his passing, was one of the oldest and the longest serving Sealer in the Laie Hawaii Temple. As a labor missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he helped to build the Church College of Hawaii, known today as Brigham Young University–Hawaii, and the Laie community. He lived a long full life of service.
Pupi loved to sing and conduct music. He would sing any chance he got, even in his sleep. He also loved to dance, especially with his wife. They were the couple to watch at any dance. They would even pull over when they heard a song on the radio they liked to get out and dance. Pupi loved spending time with his grandchildren in Hawaii and Utah. He would also make the effort to call family and close friends all over to check up on them and see how they were doing. He enjoyed being actively engaged, whether it was church callings, spending time with family, going to the farm or cleaning the yard. He was the family “MacGyver” always there to fix things around the house or car, sometimes coming up with a new way or tool to make things work properly. He always had a smile on his face and a hug to give to everyone he saw.
Pupi’s beautiful wife passed away on November 6, 2008 and had been waiting patiently for him. On August 26, 2017, he was reunited with his eternal sweetheart when he passed away peacefully with family by his side in Murray, Utah. He is also preceded in death by his parents and siblings Ralph Lafi Alisa Toelupe, Elisala Toelupe, Carl Alisa, Alisa Toelupe Jr, Verdi Toelupe, Alisa Alisa, Tolu Manuma, Fiataua Siu, and Lafi Alisa.
He is survived by all his children and grandchildren. His surviving siblings are Harvey Toelupe, Leah Afemata, Ireen Ta’aloga Stone, Fa’asei Tago, and Mata’umu Alisa.
A service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017 in Provo, Utah at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 1625 South Slate Canyon Drive. Family service starts at 10:00 am, public viewing at 11:00 am, and a bishop service at 12:15 pm. Pupi’s final resting place will be in Laie, Hawaii. Services in Hawaii will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 55-415 Iosepa Street in Laie. Family service starts at 9:00 am, public viewing at 10:30 am, and the bishop service will be at 12:00 pm. He will then be laid to rest next to his eternal companion at the Laie Cemetery.
